Carter Holt Harvey Coal Crusher

Carter Holt Harvey’s boilers are fired on woodwaste and coal. Cheaper coal than they have been using is available, but some of the pieces are too big for handling and the residence time in the furnace is insufficient for complete combustion. In order for Carter Holt Harvey to utilise this cheaper coal they needed to install a coal crusher.

Wilson Engineering Systems sourced a crusher, and by splitting a conveyor, were able to install the new crusher. In order for the mill to continue it’s around the clock operation, coal bunkers were filled, allowing a 36 hour window before more coal was needed or more expensive natural gas would have to be burned.

By working day and nightshift crews, the modifications were completed sufficiently to top up the bunkers well within the time allowed. This is despite the fact that the winter weather during the shutdown was not pleasant.
